The most populous town in Eagle County, Colorado, the Town of Avon is the Gateway to the Beaver Creek Resort. It is located right along Interstate 70 as it passes by real estate in Vail and then--after a 90-minute drive--to Denver CO real estate closer to our offices. During a Denver CO real estate search, consider picking up a reasonably priced second home in Avon and your family will be able to ride the bike paths through all of the mountain communities, fish the Eagle River, and ski and ride some of the best terrain in North America. The community boasts a scenic surroundings as does its sister city, Lech am Arlberg, Austria.
Another important access route in the community is the US Highway 6 that begins in Bishop, California and stretches through the nation, ending in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Between Avon, Edwards, Eagle-Vail, and Gypsum, Highway 6 can be used as an alternate route to the Interstates. These small communities offer affordable vacation properties and housing for many families who support the resort activities.
This is the largest community in Eagle County, weighing in with approximately 6,000 residents. Vail Resorts is actually headquartered here, even though they use a Vail mailing address. With so much movement between these Rocky Mountain communities, people all work together. The Avon businesses have joined forces with the Vail Valley Partnership, The Chamber, and tourism bureau.
The community features a very progressive transportation system. Several of the mountain communities in the county are linked together with mass transportation and the town itself offers free public transportation along four routes. Most travelers use Eagle County Airport, 27 miles to the west, or the Denver International Airport 130 miles to the east.
Located in the Mountain Time Zone, the community’s zip code is 81620, the area code is 970, the FIPS code 08-04110, and the GNIS feature ID is 0204667. The town was originally listed as a train station in 1889 under the name of Avin but changed during the incorporation process in 1978. It is a Home Rule Municipality, nicknamed "Home of Bob the Bridge," a long-awaited four-lane bridge across the Eagle River. A very young population (median age 29) brought home a median household income of $56,921 in the year 2000.
