The county was created in 1874 from portions of Summit County. It is named after Grand Lake and the Grand River, a former name of the Colorado River which has its headwaters in the county. A squabble over valuable mineral rights on portions that belonged to the county before Routt was created was settled in 1886 and the county’s northern boundary has remained the same ever since.
The Town of Winter Park is located within Grand County. However the Winter Park Resort is owned by the City and County of Denver and managed by Intrawest. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad operates a handy Ski Train between the Mile High City and the resort. The resort is the site of community festivities and concerts.
